Kiwi in Cat City by Vickie Johnstone

Book blurb -

For children aged 9+, teens and adults...

One dark night, Amy cannot sleep and she looks out of the window into the garden to see her cat, Kiwi, transfixed by the moon, which is glowing brightly like a cat's claw. Waking her brother, James, Amy suggests they follow Kiwi to see where she goes... whether it involves a hunt for mice or something else. Little do they know that, with a flick of her tail, Kiwi is going to magically change them into kittens and lead them on the adventure of their lives to a land they never knew existed in their wildest dreams. In the blue-lit world of Cat City, the budding detectives help Inspector Furrball to solve the mystery of the missing catizens and find out what happened to Madame Purrfect.

Read Excerpts here

Words from Kiwi…

My name is Kiwi and I’m a cat. I’m about four in your years, a bit on the small size, black and fluffy. But I make up for my small size with brains and bravery. I live with Amy and James, and their parents in the human world. At night time I like to visit my other home, the blue-lit Cat City, where the streets are paved with blue and white mosaics of cats, and the sun shines a bright orange. My favourite catizens are Inspector Furrball, Kip and Siam.

If I tell you a secret, do you promise not to tell? I’m magical! You might notice a faint purple glow to my fur and eyes – look closely or you might miss it – that’s my magic glowing. I could take you to Cat City if you are very, very good and don’t tell a soul!

I’m curious about almost everything. I like solving puzzles and riddles. And I love travelling – I get that from my father, Delphinius. He used to rule Cat City. I miss him a lot because he would take me to places. He was the one who first took me to the human world. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have met Amy and James.

Cat City is the coolest place in the Universe. We have little catcars, which have cat paws instead of wheels. We just peddle our paws really fast and off we go. Some younger cats have catboards and travel around on those. They’re fun. You can go quite fast. Just don’t tell my mother, Moggie, that I used to whizz around on one! I fell off a few times!

The Catema shows a few films every week. The owner is the city’s only director, Mr Eastwood. At the moment ‘Furrlight’ is showing, along with ‘For a few kitties more’. I like Meow Market. You can go there for food, clothes, anything really. There are many parks to visit too. Purrfect Mouse Burgers has amazing… well, burgers. It’s very popular.

Ladycats can get their fur and claws done at Kitty Parlour. Meow CafĂ© is nice – they make the most amazing grass cakes and flavoured milk that is the best in Cat City. We only have one hotel – the Cat Motel. It’s huge. We don’t need more than one though. If you want, you can have lots of toys and a scratching post in your room. They also have room service and order ice cream in bed!

Or, you can always just go for a walk down the street – the sun is so orangey there and the pavement sparkles with little blue mosaic cat heads. There’s no place like my catizen home!

ON MY BLOG ~ 12/10  Review  It's About Time Mamaw

BLURB:
With much of the world still undiscovered, a small band of people live a peaceful life, until the dream vision of a young boy, Feather Floating In Water, changes everything. Only nine winters old, Feather’s dreams turn his seemingly ordinary childhood into the journey of a lifetime. He must help his people face a terrifying destiny from which they cannot turn away. He must find a way to make his people listen.

Bright Sun Flower, the boy’s grandmother, guides his beginnings, teaching him about the Circle of Life, and how without it, no life can exist. But he needs a bigger push, and gets it from a grey wolf and a Great Elder. The boy’s journey leads him to discover that the Circle of Life involves all people, all living things, and not just the world he knows.

In the end, an ancient People guide the boy in his visions, toward an unexpected place hidden from outsiders.
This story is steeped in American Indian life, in their beliefs and humor, and in their love of family. It shows how we might benefit from the old ways today.

BIO:
Author of Circles, Spirals and Courage Through Fear, a short story in a book called Evolution Book 1 Put out by my publishing Company, Evolved Publishing.

Life is a wondrous mystery that I still explore. I spent my youth "feeling" my way thought it. I traveled throughout the seventies, standing on one highway ramp or another, exploring the many corridors of our country, learning about life and what it had to offer.

In 1979, deep in winter, I settled down. I was lucky enough to become the first woman journeyman pressman of a major newspaper in Colorado. After ten years of working on printing presses, an injury forced me down another path.

I made and sold jewelry, cared (still do) for abandoned animals, volunteered for a horse rescue as well as a no kill shelter. I went to school for so many different careers that ended up combining my credits to get a degree in horticulture. Unfortunately, or so I thought back then, two car accidents during my last semester, my last class, prevented my pursuing it as a living.

I had no idea what my future held, but I was fortunate; my caring and understanding husband allowed me to explore other paths and I found one I knew I belong on--writing.

Back then, I had no idea "someone" was pushing me to become a writer.

I had taken creative writing classes off and on throughout my college years, because I always felt the need to write. Nothing came of it, except satisfying my own desires, until that special dream guided me to write my novel, Circles.

I joined a couple writing groups to improve my skills. I met David Lane (aka Lane Diamond), my editor, in a group. He taught me to keep going, not to get discouraged, to write and never give up. He stuck with me and gave me the confidence I needed in myself, to let go of doubt, to move forward.

My animals taught me about myself through their own lives. They showed me that I had the patience to push onward toward my destiny, that to give up meant the end. They helped me learn that if I willed myself to wade through all the murky waters, eventuality, I would see clearly enough to move forward.

I am currently working on Stones, the third in this series and a book of short stories of the paranormal that will have something for everyone even if you are not sure you believe. I might just change your mind!

My mixed bloodlines have shown me many things in life that I am truly grateful for. Thank you, Great Mystery, for the dreams, for the guidance, for the whispers in my mind.

My Thoughts

It is Christmas Day and Bella, Lexie and Maddie are not pleased that there has been a change in how they celebrate Christmas this year.  Their parents wanted the girls to wait until the evening to open their gifts.  First they would have dinner, some family time and then they would go Christmas Caroling in their neighborhood.

Naturally the girls were only interested in getting their presents.  They didn't even help prepare the Christmas dinner or help clean up.  They weren't even bothering to pick up after themselves.  Plus they had a very poor attitude that was spoiling the day for their parents.

When girls finally got their gifts they again just left the mess they made and ran up stairs to their room to enjoy the gifts.  Bella was even disappointed because she thought she was going to get bedroom furniture.

Do you think she should have been grateful for what she received?

One of the gifts Bella got from her mom was a magic stone.  She was to make a wish on Christmas Day and it was suppose to come true.  Of course the girls didn't believe it was magic.

Do you believe the stone is magic?  Will Bella make a wish? What should be her wish? What would you wish?

This story reminded me of a movie I watched 'Ground Hog Day'.  If you have seen the movie you probably have an idea about what wish was made.

The author has another winner here!  She not only tells a good tale but also teaches values and motivation with her stories.  She has definitely done that in this book.  If this story does not motivate your child after reading this book I would be greatly surprised.

The author has a great imagination and three darling daughters that probably help her to create this amazing fun series of Three Lost Kids.

What is the true meaning of Christmas to you?
A. Receiving
B. Giving

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Welcome to the Release event of Courtney Saves Christmas
by Emlyn Chand

Courtney is a peppy young penguin who just loves exploring, and is overjoyed when she receives a compass from Santa on Christmas morning. She’s so grateful for the gift, in fact, that she just needs to give Santa a great big hug and say “Thank you!” in person. The only problem is she lives in the South Pole, and Santa is all the way on the other side of the globe!

With the aid of her new compass, Courtney sets off on a journey that takes her almost an entire year. By the time she reaches Santa’s workshop, the elves are in a flurry preparing for the upcoming holiday. Unfortunately, Rudolph is feeling very sick—too sick to guide the sleigh. If Courtney can’t find a way to help, Christmas will be ruined and all the children of the world will be devastated. What’s a little penguin to do?

Welcome to the Release day of Spirals by Ruby Standing Deer

A Holy Man, who lives in both this world and the Spirit world, waits hidden in a cave in the canyons, as a newly made woman runs toward him. She flees her would-be suitor, who wants from her more than she can give.
The Holy Man and his constant companions, a colony of mice, accept the woman within the cave. She worries that he may be crazy, but given her fear of the man who desires her, maybe crazy is not so bad.
In this sequel to Ruby Standing Deer’s first novel, Circles, the main character of Shining Light is now grown and with family. He dreams of the woman and the Holy Man in the canyons, and knows that, after four seasons of calm and peace in the Forest of Trees, he must go to them.
He seeks guidance, but the Spirits tell him only that he must rescue these two people. Yet he need not go alone. Ever Shining Light’s faithful companion and Wolf Brother, White Paws senses he must follow his Human Brother. Thus, one Human, one Wolf, and their two families set out for the unknown.
The adventure exceeds all of Shining Light’s expectations, and he learns more about his place in this world than the Holy Peoples of his band could ever teach him.

My Thoughts

I read this book to the rythme of Twas the Night Before Christmas.   It sounded great!

Not a creature was stirring cause it was so darn hot!

Poor Janie was really stressing over the heat wave they were having and it was spoiling Christmas.
Her faithful and confused dog was listening to Janie carry on about  the weather.  They even noticed that the Christmas Tree was dying from the heat.  She walked in the kitchen and stepped on a box which tipped over and lo and behold something magical was happening.

Will Christmas be saved from the heat?  What about the poor Christmas Tree, will it survive?  What in the world was in that box?!?!

Well you better grab your copy of JANIE AND THE MAGIC BOX CHRISTMAS and find out what happened when that box tore open!

Julia writes this rhyming tale with great humor which will have you and your children laughing out loud.  I like how she describes her books as edutainment in rhyme and in prose.

While reading this book you can almost  feel the movement of the magic because of the illustrations that bring this magical rhyming tale alive.  The author Julia Dweck  and the illustrator Terry Sirrell have definitely created a magical Christmas story for all ages to enjoy.

I highly recommend this book

What inspired you to write Cat or Dog for President?

Our nation is not an ordinary one given its ethnically diverse population and rich history that have contributed vitally to the shaping of twenty-first century culture in America. As a nation committed to maintaining freedom and opportunities for all, different talents and abilities have been recognized in all aspects of American life, contributing to our sense of awareness and appreciation of what it means to be an American today.

Disasters like Hurricane Sandy draw us together and serve as a reminder of who we are as a nation and what we represent to the rest of the world. Evidence of selfless acts of kindness, courage, reaching out, and caring for others have been significant in news reports. In sharp contrast to what has been reported, we see presidential candidates, on a daily basis, arguing publicly and divisively about both foreign and domestic issues.

One of the contributions of my story, Cat or Dog for President, is the way in which it draws on the innocent perspective of a child, in an effort to provide young readers with the opportunity to think about the political process and the true meaning of words, such as kindness, compassion, acceptance, and the importance of diversity in all aspects of human life. Unlike the contemptuous nature of some political campaigns, there are no good sides or bad sides in this story. Instead, there is a sensitive side that recognizes the common good and what it means to create a better world for our community and ourselves.  However, because our fervor can be fueled by a political campaign, we can easily forget that we are all in this together. The same type of well meaning intentions can play out in the pet world as well, with a line being drawn in the sand between cat and dog lovers. These events are something that is easily understood by children.

In my story, cats and dogs are metaphors for democrats and republicans. In this imagined world, young readers will have the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of the political process as they read about each party building a platform, orchestrating a campaign, and thinking strategically about the roles they will play while attempting to win the presidency.

The conflict between cat and dog will be especially exciting for young readers, as each candidate’s behavior escalates with such a feverish pitch that their words eventually turn into noise. In addition to creating interest, my story is meant to remind young readers to take the time to listen and value the unique perspectives of others. It stands to reason that if people treat others with mutual respect, compassion, and dignity, they can expect the same in return.

Author Julia and  Illustrator Bill

My Thoughts

The book starts out with a child contemplating the presidential race. He had a wonderful idea that his cat or dog could run for president.  Dogs and cats love to race. They have totally different views on how to get rid of crime and thieves. This cat and dog were starting to run a dirty campaign playing tricks on each other. Then they came to a purr-fect solution.

What do you think? Who will be the president?  Who would you vote for?

I really like the fun rhyming story from the child's perspective.  Children will enjoy this story and probably try to figure out if their pets might have some good characteristics to run for president. The illustration were depict the story with a darling kitty cat and really cute puppy dog.  It also had all the patriotic colors and background for the campaign.

I wish I had read and posted about this book during the 2012 Presidential Campaign.

This book is a fun way for you children to remember the 2012 Presidential Campaign.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Ella the Pink Elephant ~ Her Life, Love and Fame by Doris Rueger ~ GIVEAWAY/REVIEW

About Book

In new children's book, beloved elephant learns how to grow older gracefully.

In Ella the Pink Elephant: Her Life, Love and Fame, Doris Rueger creates a children's book with a moral lesson as a former star elephant learns how to accept herself as she ages.

BELLPORT, N.Y. - In Ella the Pink Elephant: Her Life, Love and Fame, children's author Doris Rueger writes and illustrates a fantasy tale with a moral message. It follows the life of Ella the Elephant, a star-studded pachyderm that never lacked for attention.

As a child, Ella was the star animal of one of the world's largest zoos. Her keepers dressed her in pink silks and shawls, while friends and admirers flocked to her side. Yet as all creatures must do, Ella grew older. She grew tired of all the work it took to remain at the center of everyone's attention. After many years, Ella wanted to be taken to a retirement zoo where she could rest and enjoy her days in peace.

In this restful reserve, Ella was by herself. For the first time, she looked at herself in the mirror, without makeup or fancy clothes, and saw an aging elephant with grey skin and wrinkles. "Who am I?" she asked. "I am neither Ella, the beautiful elephant baby, nor am I Ella, the gorgeous elephant modeling expensive clothes and being the star at weddings. I am just plain me. No adornments. Will I still be loved?" Ella would have to find a new way to be happy. She looks in the mirror and realizes she was a beloved elephant, full of tender memories that she could enjoy for the rest of her life.

Through her storybook tale of talking zoo animals, Ms. Rueger weaves a tale that encourages children to love and accept themselves for who they are. A children's fantasy with fun characters and a moral ending, Ella the Pink Elephant is illustrated by the author in crayon and color pencil. Self-acceptance, knowing and loving one's true self and learning how to graciously live in the limelight are lessons parents would be happy to impart to their young ones.

My Thoughts

In a large zoo with many visitors two of the zoo's grown elephants are about to become parents.  The zookeepers and  visitors were so excited that there was soon to be a baby elephant born.

Finally the day arrives and the happy zookeepers and the proud parents present the baby girl elephant they named Ella.  In honor of the baby Ella she was given her own zookeeper, Zeppo.  Zeppo use to be a clown in a circus.  Zeppo had fun caring for Ella, he would dress her up in pink clothes and jewelry.  She loved all the attention and felt very pretty.

Soon Ella grew too large to wear the pretty clothes.  Zeppo recommended that she go live and work for a friend of his that preformed weddings and that Ella could be a part of the weddings.  Ella thought this was a wonderful idea as long as she could still wear pink.  Now Ella enjoys carrying the groom on her back to meet their brides as part of the wedding ceremony.

When Ella started getting older and too tired to work she began to worry because she had so many wrinkles and was not very pretty.  What would she possibly do now?  Who will want Ella now that she was no longer pretty?  Would her friends still come to see her?

The author writes a lovely story about Ella the Pink Elephant and the exciting life she lived.  Doris tells us how much everyone loved Ella and looked forward to visiting her.  She teaches us that we are loved for who we are not what we look like.

Children will love this story and want to share the story with their friends.  I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.
