Spirals by Ruby Standing Deer ~ Innovative Online Book Tour

About Book

A Holy Man, who lives in both this world and the Spirit world, waits hidden in a cave in the canyons, as a newly made woman runs toward him. She flees her would-be suitor, who wants from her more than she can give.
The Holy Man and his constant companions, a colony of mice, accept the woman within the cave. She worries that he may be crazy, but given her fear of the man who desires her, maybe crazy is not so bad.
In this sequel to Ruby Standing Deer’s first novel, Circles, the main character of Shining Light is now grown and with family. He dreams of the woman and the Holy Man in the canyons, and knows that, after four seasons of calm and peace in the Forest of Trees, he must go to them.
He seeks guidance, but the Spirits tell him only that he must rescue these two people. Yet he need not go alone. Ever Shining Light’s faithful companion and Wolf Brother, White Paws senses he must follow his Human Brother. Thus, one Human, one Wolf, and their two families set out for the unknown.
The adventure exceeds all of Shining Light’s expectations, and he learns more about his place in this world than the Holy Peoples of his band could ever teach him.

About Author

Author of Circles, Spirals and Courage Through Fear, a short story in a book called Evolution Book 1 Put out by my publishing Company, Evolved Publishing.

Life is a wondrous mystery that I still explore. I spent my youth "feeling" my way thought it. I traveled throughout the seventies, standing on one highway ramp or another, exploring the many corridors of our country, learning about life and what it had to offer.

In 1979, deep in winter, I settled down. I was lucky enough to become the first woman journeyman pressman of a major newspaper in Colorado. After ten years of working on printing presses, an injury forced me down another path.

I made and sold jewelry, cared (still do) for abandoned animals, volunteered for a horse rescue as well as a no kill shelter. I went to school for so many different careers that ended up combining my credits to get a degree in horticulture. Unfortunately, or so I thought back then, two car accidents during my last semester, my last class, prevented my pursuing it as a living.

I had no idea what my future held, but I was fortunate; my caring and understanding husband allowed me to explore other paths and I found one I knew I belong on--writing.

Back then, I had no idea "someone" was pushing me to become a writer.

I had taken creative writing classes off and on throughout my college years, because I always felt the need to write. Nothing came of it, except satisfying my own desires, until that special dream guided me to write my novel, Circles.

My Thoughts

In the first book Feather went from the young boy, to a young boy turned man, Shining Light at an early age.  He was given many gifts from the creator.  In this book Shining Light is not only a Holy Man but a husband, a father of a new baby girl, he is also a son of and grandson.  If you look closely at this 15 year old Holy Man man you will at times see a glimpse of the young boy Feather.  After growing quickly in the role of Holy Man his visions and gifts are more powerful now.  He still has his Wolf at his side along with the Wolf''s mate and puppies.

He is forced by his visions to search for the Rainbow. Not sure what he is looking for yet he knows this is what the Creator shows is necessary for The People.  He will not make this journey alone.  He would rather have had made the journey alone.  The Creator show him it is not just his vision.  Others have a the same  vision.

In another place lives an old Holy Man that has lived many moons alone in a cave with only mice as his companions.  He also is waiting for the Rainbow.  He has prepared for this meeting because he has lived long among the world and the spirit world and both worlds have told him what he is to do when the Rainbow arrives to his dwelling. He too will be making a perilous journey.

What is this Rainbow and what does it have to do with Shining Light, The People and the old Holy Man?

The author makes you feel as part of Feather's/Shining Light's  family while reading about his family, his journey to find the Rainbow and especially the need to protect his People.  He has such a loving heart that you'll want to help him through his journey.

I am looking forward to reading book three in this series.  It is books like this series that I wished never ends.  Keep them coming!

I can't help but to compare this series to another series I had the pleasure of reading and that was The Earth's Children by Jean M. Auel.  I devoured this series.

I highly recommend this book along with the rest of the series.

I rate this book a 5+ out of 5.

Where to buy: Amazon

About  Author

When Sharon Vanek (now Schmidt) was 8 years old, she asked the question, “What would happen if a child lost a tooth on Christmas Eve?” Her mom, Karen Vanek, used the query as an opportunity to work together to create a children’s story. Sharon is now a mother, and her daughter recently lost her first tooth!

Karen Vanek, a retired educator, loves to problem solve and create. She especially loves words and learning about new cultures and people. A priority for Karen is her role as a mother and grandmother. She loves stimulating the thinking of her children and challenging them to problem solve and create.

Karen's former 3rd grade ESL student, Julio Mercado got in touch with Karen to visit just when she was choosing an illustrator, and he volunteered for the job.

My Thoughts

Amanda wiggles her loose tooth as she  listened to her mother read The Twas The Night Before Christmas. All of a sudden the tooth came loose into her hand.  She was so surprised and began to worry that since it was Christmas Eve Santa and the Tooth Fairy would come at the same time. She talked to her mother about her concerns.  Would one of them not come?  Had Santa and the Tooth Fairy ever meet?  Her mother tried to calm her and suggest she go ahead and put the tooth under her pillow.  As Amanda put the tooth under her pillow she made a wish that Santa and the Tooth Fairy would get to meet each other.
What do you think Santa and the Tooth Fair will do if they meet?  What would they talk about?  I think it would be wonderful to witness such an astounding event.

The authors and illustrator have come together and created a story with several lesson to learn.  The one lesson is a fun one.  When you loose a tooth in the very front your tongue can play peek-a-boo through the gap in your teeth.  Another is making new friends and the gift of giving.  Then an important one is to take care of your teeth it is good for your overall health.

I highly recommend this book.

Poppy the Proud ~ A Bird Brain Book written by Emlyn Chand, illustrated by Sarah Shaw

About Book

Poppy is the prettiest peacock in the entire garden, but one day his privileged existence is upset when an all-white peacock is born and promptly named the most beautiful by a smitten flock. Intensely jealous, Poppy no longer knows where he fits in and decides to reclaim his title as the fairest bird in all the land, no matter what it takes.

In a desperate attempt to regain the admiration of his peers, Poppy steals items from the humans that visit his park. He wraps himself in a beautiful silk scarf, wears a series of ornate bangles around his neck, and even tries to dye his feathers with colored dust from a festive Holi celebration.

Unfortunately, each of these attempts not only fails to improve his appearance, they actually make it worse. What’s a poor bird to do? In this compelling tale of self-esteem, pride, and learning what makes each of us special, Poppy the peacock discovers that true beauty lies beneath the feathers.

My Thoughts

Poppy is a beautiful peacock and is very pampered. His audience of fans follow him around complimenting him on his beauty. They bring gifts him gifts. He has come to expect all this attention until one day no one seemed to even notice him.

Everyone was staring at a snow white peacock.  Snow White was so graceful.  What was so attractive about a white peacock when he had so many colors on him to admire?

He decided to add to his beauty by adding things like people in the park were wearing like a pink scarf and silver bangle bracelets so everyone would be sure to notice him.  But everyone laughed at him, that is except for Snow White.

One can be proud of themselves without becoming conceited.  He was so busy admiring himself he could not see the beauty in anyone else.   This sometimes happens to superstars they get so use to all the attention and then when that attention fades because of their conceit no one seems to have anything nice to say about them.  As the saying goes "Pride goeth before the fall".  Luckily he listened to some good advice from Snow White.

To find out what advice Snow White gave Poppy you will have to read the book.  A very good book indeed!

The illustrations are beyond amazing they depict the story to the point you would not need the words to know what the story is about.  But the combination of author's wise words and illustrations bring forth a beautiful children's book that will also teach your child the perils of pride.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book 5 out of 5

Heidi Grange wrote a Four Star Review which she is sharing on this post.

In The Black Shard, the second in the Magic Warble series, we find Kristina returning to the land of Bernovem. At first she is excited to see all her old friends again, especially Werrien, the prince. But something seems off, and she soon finds herself plagued with doubts and questions while Werrien obsesses over a black stone that gives her the chills. The book heads into the action quite quickly,

There are plenty of twists and lots of fun characters. I especially like the talking animals. The characters are diverse enough to be interesting with enough depth for me to care about them and their choices both good and bad. Like many fantasies there is plenty of magic, good and bad to go around, but it felt like a fresh take on the fantasy quest standard plot line. I recommend this book for middle grade readers who enjoy a good fantasy quest with plenty of challenges for our heroes to face, including their own weaknesses. Note: It's clear that this is not the end of the story, like many second books there are a lot of questions left unanswered.

MORRIS THE VILLAGE VOICE ~ Written & Illustrated by DORIS RUEGER

Children’s book highlights importance of building self-esteem in children

Morris the Village Voice by Doris Rueger brings timeless lessons and traditional values to children through the fictional story of an advertising column’s struggle to stand proud

BELLPORT, N.Y. – Doris Rueger uses a humanized advertising column to educate her young readers about important values and lessons that will help them in life in her new book, Morris the Village Voice. Rueger, who is also the illustrator, offers her young audience valuable messages and lessons, like knowing and loving oneself, speaking up, asking for help, working together and much more.

In the center of a small village an advertising column that highlights all of the latest local attractions stands tall and proud. The personified column goes by Morris, and throughout Morris the Village Voice, he shares all the things he loves about being an advertising column. Children would race around him and get so excited whenever a new flyer for the circus was posted, while parents could turn to him for the latest in news and events.

But when the village’s advertising committee and mayor want to replace him with an update, glitzy billboard, Morris is heartbroken. Despite his pain, he asks two of his young visitors, Anna and Jason, for help. With the children, prayer and positive thinking on his side, Morris believes he has a great chance of standing in the middle of the village square for years to come.

Rueger used her grandchildren as a vehicle for writing Morris the Village Voice. Her love and admiration for them led her to create a story that she hopes will inspire and encourage their generation and many more to come.

“I want to teach children the value of living, learning and loving themselves for who they are,” Rueger says. “If you believe in something strongly, you can make a difference!”

She wants her readers, regardless of how young they may seem, to understand the importance of asking for help, standing up for themselves and their beliefs and self acceptance. She believes it is these lessons that help us all live a healthy and creative life.

About Author

My Thoughts

In a small little village, right in the middle of town stood a handsome tall column named Morris.  Morris was an "advertising column".  People and businesses would put posters on the column to promote an important event.  Morris was a very popular spot to visit.  Kids would run circles around  him grownups would come to read the current events and to sit on the comfortable little bench that sat nearby.

As time went by, people and businesses began advertising in modern ways like neon sign and such.  Which left Morris to be neglected . He was getting rusty and posters were peeling off him.  People stopped visiting him.  He was nothing more than an eye sore.

One day a young girl passed by Morris and told her friend she remembered coming to this place and playing.  She said it was a shame that Morris had been so neglected.  When she went home she told her parents she would like to get some friends together and clean up Morris and the area around the column so people would  remember what a happy place it use to be. People needed to have more respect their village history.

What all could she and her friends do to bring life back to Morris as it had been in the past?
They had some wonderful ideas and I am sure you could think of a few yourself.  Be sure to read the book to find out what the Village people did to restore Morris.

The author teaches the importance for historical preservation of famous landmarks.  This is something that young and old need to learn what they can do to preserve history in their local area.   Respect historical places.

The artwork in this book is refreshing and will undoubtedly be appealing to children.  Who doesn't enjoy drawing and coloring?

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 4 out of 5.

CIRCLES ~ A Historical Novel by RUBY STANDING DEER

About Book

With much of the world still undiscovered, a small band of people live a peaceful life, until the dream vision of a young boy, Feather Floating In Water, changes everything. Only nine winters old, Feather’s dreams turn his seemingly ordinary childhood into the journey of a lifetime. He must help his people face a terrifying destiny from which they cannot turn away. He must find a way to make his people listen.

Bright Sun Flower, the boy’s grandmother, guides his beginnings, teaching him about the Circle of Life, and how without it, no life can exist. But he needs a bigger push, and gets it from a grey wolf and a Great Elder. The boy’s journey leads him to discover that the Circle of Life involves all people, all living things, and not just the world he knows.

In the end, an ancient People guide the boy in his visions, toward an unexpected place hidden from outsiders.

This story is steeped in American Indian life, in their beliefs and humor, and in their love of family. It shows how we might benefit from the old ways today.

Where to buy: AmazonSmashwordsReader Store, iTunes

Read Chapter 1 here.

Excerpts

He watched as Feather tossed flat stones in the hopes they would skip across the river.

The boy stopped and turned to him. "Grandmother said she had too much to do this day to play with me, but that you had lots of time, and that I should take you out for a walk. She did not want you getting stiff. What does stiff mean?"

"Ah, stiff means bent over from too much work. I work so hard, she worries that I might get sore. Such a caring grandmother you have."

Feather's wide eyes and big smile stopped Hawk Soaring from telling his grandson he was not about to get stiff. He couldn't help but grin. He had spent so many winters with his woman that he couldn't remember them all.

She remains as beautiful as ever. Perhaps just a bit more opinionated. I could love no one else.

Feather grinned back. "Why are you smiling so much? Better be careful—you could lose some more teeth. They could fall out!"

Hawk Soaring bent over with laughter. His grandson had long been amused by his nearly toothless bottom jaw. "Little one, if I lose any more teeth, you will have to feed me, because it will be your fault!"

He stood up, reached out to Feather for support, and wiped happy tears from his eyes. "There, now none will fall out, because I am standing up. You are such a joy. You should walk me more. I would like that."

"Really? Grandmother says you sit around with your old friends because, at your age, you cannot do as much as you used to do, and she says you need lots of rest. I would not want to tire you out." He maintained his serious tone, tightened his lips, and squared his chin. "Will I wear you out? Because if I did, Grandmother would have no one to help her when she gets as old as you. I would have worn you all out and used you up."

                                                        ***

She reached out and squeezed him to the basket of raspberries that sat across the front of her dress. "What a lucky mother I am to have such a son, so smart and so good to look at. Girls will fight over you like a dog fights over a bone."

"Um... Mother?"

She drifted into thoughts of how special her son would be to another woman someday. Another woman? How could my son ever leave me? She would have to be a very special woman to take my son! I would not allow just any woman to take his hand and lead him away from me. She would first need to prove herself worthy of such a fine man. Never—

"Mother? Mother, please listen to me!"

She shook her head to clear her mind, and focused on Feather. "What is it, my son?"

She gazed into his laughing eyes. Puzzled, she pushed him back, and gasped at her wet, sticky arms, red with tiny seeds stuck all over them—and her dress! The berries had oozed through the basket when she had squeezed him to her bosom.

"Hoohaaa-haaa! The only place you do not have berries on you is red too!" He pointed to her ever-warming face, laughed, and fell backwards off the boulder.

Good one—another story for the long winter. This will be real fun, walking back to camp with an empty basket and a red-seeded dress top. "Son, stop laughing and look at me!"

He obeyed and looked at her—for a split second—then roared with laughter and held his belly. He kicked up red dust that painted him the same color.

                                                             ***

Makes Baskets slipped and wet rocks and started to lose her grip on her mother. The loud crash against the canyon walls drowned out her screams. She too felt the dangerous pull of the muddy water. She reached out for a small tree above the water, but it uprooted and washed away in the torrent.

Teeth grabbed the back of her dress and hands pulled at her as she held onto her mother's slipping hand. Panic rose as her grip weakened.

She felt the furious kick of her unborn child. The pain caught her by surprise and she gasped. The water became alive to Makes Baskets. It tried to claim her and the innocent child, who had yet to see the outside world. She fought hard, screaming and praying for help. She was not going to lose her mother or the daughter who—she swore—cried inside her.

She struggled to tighten her grip on her mother's hand. Her legs cramped and she stretched them in hopes of relieving the pain, but the action made her slip more. Two hearts now beat in rapid unison inside her. Fear made it impossible to swallow. Her throat tightened.

Feather's scream brought another concern to her dwindling strength.

My animals taught me about myself through their own lives. They showed me that I had the patience to push onward toward my destiny, that to give up meant the end. They helped me learn that if I willed myself to wade through all the murky waters, eventuality, I would see clearly enough to move forward.

I am currently working on Stones, the third in this series and a book of short stories of the paranormal that will have something for everyone even if you are not sure you believe. I might just change your mind!

My mixed bloodlines have shown me many things in life that I am truly grateful for. Thank you, Great Mystery, for the dreams, for the guidance, for the whispers in my mind.

My Thoughts

Feather Floating In Water lives with his grandparents and his mother.  Feather is a dreamer, he is a very special young boy. He is older than his age.  He will be a very important person to his people.  He sees things that will change his life and that of his people.  His grandmother, Bright Sun Flower understands what he is going through because she has the same dreams.

Feather has a very special companion. It is a grey wolf that has chosen Feather.  He is a very wise wolf.

Feather has the respect of his people's Holy Man.  The Holy Man knows about Feather's dreams and wants to help train him to be the leader he is destine to become.

I really enjoy reading books like Circles.  The history and lifestyle of the people are fascinating hearing the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The author kept my attention while reading this story.  The character Feather had such a loving and supportive family.  They encouraged him to be the person he was meant to be for his people.  A true leader. The grandparents were depicted as most grandparents very proud and protective of their young grandson and his future.

Even though I had a situation going on that kept pulling me away from the book I was still drawn to get back to the book to learn more about Feather and his future.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Today a Wonderful Treat! Vickie Johnstone
Shares 2 books of POEMS

Kaleidoscope
Published in March 2011

This is a collection of 119 poems - some long, some short, some haiku - that I have written on various subjects over the years. They range from serious to funny, covering subjects from the everyday to philosophy or the abstract. Some are snippets from the lives of imaginary characters or just ideas or reflections on nature.

The book is structured under eight themes: figures; nature; abstracts; love; haiku; creatures; childhood and dark wave.

Kindle   2.99 ebook

Excerpts of Poems from book:

Vickie's favorite is the Fox and the Mole

We ride in cars

Slow to ride
Our comic days
All drowned in wine
In the stifling heat
We ride in cars
With windows down
Singing to strangers
Who cannot sing
Hold the tune
Against the summer breeze
With the dog’s head bobbing
He laps it up
The speeding cars
And the lingering lights
The ripped out trees
Shouting our sights
We ride in cars
Chase the tyre tracks
From dawn til dusk
We hold our fire back
And we scream and laugh
In the silencing
As the dark draws near
And we pretend to sleep
Keep the fires burning
As the dog nods on
In the piercing light
Of the summer sun

Rain

She sits and dreams of making rain
In the dark, shadows dancing mimic
Colours of the aghast
Sights and sounds and murmurs
Still breathing
Watching over the edge
Of everything
The glass splinters into a million shapes
Cast in a myriad of lights
Bright and sparkling, dancing
In the spring sun
And she dreams of making rain
That tears and crashes
Washing away the shards of glass
Splattering the colours rent
With droplets of ice-cold nothing
Cuts and caresses
Shards of grass peeking through
Clouds gathering
Dust.

Poppies

Marching in formation
Across distant lands
Enduring the unendurable
For a distant cause
Marching in formation
Up long, steep hills
Crossing mudflats and seas
For a patriotic cause
Marching in formation
Forever forward
Seeing things never forgotten
For a government’s cause
Marching in formation
For this the poppies grow
In patches of red blood
For the worthiest cause

Moon beams

Distancing the days
In her fragile accolade
The moon reaches down
Towards coloured boats bobbing
Twinkling she shines
Lighting the way
For every stranger passing
And old friends returning
She travels the skies
In a silvery glide
Always remembering
The shortness of time

I don’t mind

I don’t mind
If you stare
Or paint the room in blue
While I sleep

I don’t mind
If you walk a while
Or smile in your style
And mimic your expression

I don’t mind
If the urge to be is too much
Or the strength to see is gone
While I dream

The fox and the mole

Let’s rob a bank
Said the fox to the mole
I’ve got mouths to feed
And I’m feeling the need

Ok, said the mole
But you know I can’t see
I can burrow real deep
But I might fall asleep

Well, said the fox
I can offer my cunning
I will find a way inside
And to you I’ll confide

Wake me up said the mole
When you discover this
As I’ve got a hunch
We’re in a credit crunch

So the fox went off thinking
How to rob the bank
And came up with a plan
While eating a cherry flan

Well then, asked the mole
What do you suggest we do
To steal all the money
But not do anything funny?

Aha, said the fox grinning
I’ll tell you what to do
Just burrow under the bank
While I drive up in a tank

Oh, said the mole frowning
I never thought of that
I didn’t know foxes could drive
Have you told this to your wife?

No, we have to keep this secret
Said the fox to the mole
As she’ll have my guts for garters
And that’s just for starters

So off went the fox and mole
To begin their bank robber life –
They rivalled Bonny and Clyde
Living it up, the law they defied

Sample of one of the poems:

Rain fallen like stars

Sprinkles silver-like touches,

Dancing beside me

Some distant day she’ll
Return when she sees beauty
In a rainbow sing

Under sparkling stars
She laughs like water cascades
Rippling endlessly

Raspberries blood red
Ripe, soft and so succulent
Chilled ice-cream slithers

Eyes turn to the sun,
River of blue-black shimmers
On peacock feathers

Leaves hurtle, twisting,
Dropping without an echo –
Curved, their hands open

About Vickie

Hi, I live in London, UK, and I’m a freelance editor. I've published 3 books of poetry: Kaleidoscope, Life’s Rhythms, and Travelling Light. My novels include: 4 books in the Kiwi Series for kids; 3 Heads & a Tail, and Day of the Living Pizza. Besides books, I love art, travelling, nature, the sea, gigs, dancing like an eejit, rock music, films, fluffies and tarot. Sleeping should be an Olympic sport.

My Thoughts

Kaleidoscope and Life's Rhythms are full of beautiful poems.  If you want to be inspired then you should definitely read Vickie's poems.  I did not want to rush through either of the books.  How can I describe how I felt when reading the poems?  I wanted to enter the poem and feel the emotions.  Kind of like sitting in my rocker looking out into the piney woods that surround my house.  I feel the trees swaying, birds and squirrels playing.  Reading her poems were like that, inspiring, heart felt and full of wonder.  An emotional experience.

I like the way it was divided into subjects:  figures, nature, abstracts, haikui, creatures, childhood, dark wave

I have several favorites in Kaleidoscope but here are two.
THE AFFAIR  and THE DARK WOOD.

I will share one of them.  Then when you get the book you can read THE AFFAIR.

The dark wood

In the deepest depths of the dark wood
See the spectre trees stand and stare
Stretching out their bony fingers
To trip up weary wanderers who dare
Go freely into the unknown air.

In the deepest depths of the dark wood
Catch the ghostly moonlight crossings
Of the languid shapes that sink and shift
Floating endlessly in the speckled frosting
That lies in sheets on the muddy ground.

In the deepest depths of the dark wood
Hear the plaintiff wails of the ever lost
Stuck in time along the virgin paths
Caught in the lair of the unseen host
Who travels alone with his silent scream.

In the deepest depths of the dark wood
Keep your wits about you in the night shade
Lest you wander too far from the spectre trees
And find yourself far from the grassy glad
Beneath the ever-present smiling moon.

Vickie, Thanks for Sharing your Poems with us!
